What it does

Model it once. Item Refs, cut lists and cutting files come from the model.

Only the tools steelwork and pipework need, without the menus and options of a general-purpose CAD package. Everything comes from the 3D model, so the cut list, bolts and cutting files agree with what you drew.

One download for everyone. Start with the free trial; if you buy a licence, enter the key in the same program and carry on — there’s nothing to reinstall. We ask for your name and email before the download starts.

Buying a licence

£345 + VAT (£414 including UK VAT at 20%) for a perpetual licence for one named user, with 12 months of updates and email support. Use the same download — there is no separate paid version.

Everything is in the trial. Steel and pipework modelling, stairs, durbar and grating floors, handrails, Item Refs, cut lists, bolt lists, plate cutting DXFs and STEP import / export are all in the download you try. A licence key unlocks nothing extra; it removes the time limit and allows commercial use.

Installing

A few minutes on either system.

Once it’s running, the Menu Guide (PDF) explains every command.

Windows

  1. Double-click the downloaded HamwiCAD-Trial-Setup-v1.13.exe and follow the steps. It installs for your own account; no administrator needed.
  2. Start HamwiCAD from the Start Menu and accept the licence agreement.
  3. Licensed copies: enter your key in File / Import › Licence…

“Windows protected your PC”HamwiCAD is not yet code-signed, so Windows does not recognise it. Choose More info, then Run anyway.

Using the .zip instead?Right-click it, choose Extract All…, then double-click install.bat in the extracted folder.

Linux

  1. Double-click the downloaded .deb file and choose Install. It asks for your password, because it installs for all users of the computer.
  2. Start HamwiCAD from the applications menu and accept the licence agreement.
  3. Licensed copies: enter your key in File / Import › Licence…

Using the .tar.gz instead?Unpack it and run the installer:

Linux Mint 22, Ubuntu 24.04 or newerHamwiCAD needs glibc 2.39 or later; the installer warns you on an older system.

If nothing appears, or the window stays black

Some graphics drivers can’t draw HamwiCAD’s 3D view. HamwiCAD normally notices and switches by itself; if it doesn’t:

  • Windows: open the Start Menu and choose HamwiCAD (safe display).
  • Linux: choose HamwiCAD (safe display) in the menu, then Help › Software 3D display.

Safe display draws the 3D view without the graphics card. It is slower with very large models but otherwise the same.

Licence & support

Licences, support and the small print.

HamwiCAD's floor, stair, hole and notch checks help you work to BS EN ISO 14122 and the relevant design standards. They are an aid, not a sign-off: the design must still be checked and approved by a competent person.

You accept the HamwiCAD licence agreement when the program first starts, and can read it again under Help › Licence Agreement. Please read it before you buy. HamwiCAD uses open-source libraries, including Qt and Open CASCADE under the LGPL; their notices, licence texts and a written offer of their source code are under Help › About.
